“Don’t ask for what’s reasonable, ask for what’s right.”

- Martin Litton

Martin Litton, pioneering Grand Canyon guide and activist, gave that succinct advice to David Brower as the latter was campaigning to save the Colorado River from yet another dam. Steven writes with the spirit of Litton's mantra in mind.

Steven was inducted into the magic of rivers at a young age, fishing and floating rivers near his childhood home in Portland, Oregon. Ever since those early experiences, he's been trying to capture in words the rapturous sense of wild freedom that sometimes comes along with a good day on the water.

According to The World Wildlife Fund's 2022 Living Planet report, since 1970, freshwater species worldwide have declined 83%. The same water that supports this fecund, miraculous and joy-inducing panoply of life also supports our own species. What we think, and just as importantly, what we feel about these creatures is vital to our survival. If you believe these things are true, then Steven's words might be for you.
